Is Bravely Default the best portable game ever? – Reader’s Feature. by Metro

A reader enthuses over 3DS role-player Bravely Default, and explains why he thinks it’s the best Final Fantasy game for years.Due to a lack of free time any more, with work and family life taking away most of my weekly hours, I tend to play games which are rather short, or pick up and play games where there’s no story (beat ‘em-ups usually). However, there’s one game series I will always find time for, no matter what, if it means a week off work, no social life or packing my girlfriend off shopping all week, then it has to be done, the series in question: Final Fantasy. Or in this case, Bravely Default on the Nintendo 3DS.Around a year ago I asked GC if this promising role-playing game would see a UK release, and have since been watching it’s progress. The original Bravely Default was later given an upgrade, and named Bravely Default: For The Sequel. This is the version us lucky European gamers have. Developer, Silicon Studio (makers of 3D Dot Game Heroes) are an independent Japanese firm who teamed up with Square Enix because every item, magic spell and equipment are from the Final Fantasy universe, from phoenix downs to ribbons and dark matters to aegis shields, it’s all there and will delight even the most hardcore Final Fantasy fan.Admittedly Bravely Default isn’t the best name for a 70 hour role-player, but that aside it’s not just one of the best role-players available at the moment, it’s arguably the best handheld game ever made. After discovering the UK release date I instantly pre-ordered the limited deluxe edition of the game, which came in a large black box, containing a deck of AR cards, a statue of the leading character Agnès, a mini-soundtrack, a lovely art book, and the game. It was like Christmas had come early. So finally, with a week off work, and an understanding girlfriend who caught up on her favourite films, I went upstairs to play this hotly anticipated game in piece, and what a game as well. It’s like a modern version of the classic Final Fantasy series all in one game. All four leading characters are likeable, especially Ringabel. The game world’s characters are also funny. Sage (the dirty old man in the woods) was hilarious, as was the black mage, Ominus Crowe. The game also featured towns, where you could rest up, buy magic tomes, items and equipment. The graphics and music throughout the game are fantastic and a real joy.Where Bravely Default comes into it’s own though, is the battle system. Without going into to much depth, you can launch a four attack assault or simply defend. You can also just attack once and save up your attacks if you like. Initially I thought the battles were too easy, but I soon discovered that launching all four heroes to attack four times each, had its drawbacks. Especially against bosses who had more than enough hit points to cope with your barrage and will then launch his own assault which will probably wipe your party out. So strategy was the key to some great battles.I am now at the end of this superb game. I have beaten every boss, found every item, and loved every second of it. It goes to show that a long term gamer can still be wowed by a handheld game, which must make this game special. It’s a shame the game will be overlooked by many, and even more of a shame that it’s not on a home console either, but if you have never played a role-playing game or a Final Fantasy before then this is the perfect place to start. Thank you Silicon Studio and Square Enix for bringing this masterpiece to Europe.

Mobile and tablet devices pre-loaded with the popular app Flappy Bird have attracted bids of more than £83,000 on eBay, after the game was withdrawn by its creator. The hit game was removed from Apple's App Store and Google Play on Sunday by its Vietnamese inventor, Dong Nguyen, who had previously announced his decision on Twitter.Gamers that already have Flappy Birds on their mobiles are looking to exploit its popularity by offering their devices for sale on eBay, attracting bids from £400 to £83,000.It is not clear whether bids are genuine, but an eBay spokesman suggested they were unlikely to allow the transactions anyway.

"Ensuring a good customer experience is our top priority and we are in the process of removing listings for these devices, as they do not meet a number of our requirements," he said."In particular, devices such as tablets and mobiles must be completely reset to factory condition before being sold on eBay."The exact reason for the game's withdrawal is not known, but Nguyen indicated legal issues were not to blame.Nintendo also denied claims that a legal challenge it issued had led to the game's withdrawal. Spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa told the Wall Street Journal: "While we usually do not comment on the rumours and speculations, we have already denied the speculation."Launched in May 2013, the game was free to download and required players to tap the screen to keep the bird flying through an endless series of pipes.Despite its simple graphics, it was widely known as an extremely difficult game, since many users could only keep the bird in the air for seconds before it hit the ground.Flappy Bird was one of the most downloaded mobile games ever. It topped the free games charts on both Apple and Google's online stores, making it the year's most popular mobile game so far.The official game is no longer available to download online, but it still works on mobile devices that have previously installed it.On Twitter, fans of the game have been using hashtags of #RIPFlappyBird and #SaveFlappyBird, to raise awareness and encourage support for the return of the game.

Games Inbox: Sonic The Hedgehog and friends, PS4 light bar, and Deadly Premonition By Metro

He died on the way back to his home planetThe rebranding of Sonic ‘And Friends’ reminds me of that Poochie episode of The Simpsons. I can imagine the Sega execs around a table talking about making the characters more edgy to appeal to the teenage demographic, and using words like ‘Pro Active’ and ‘Paradigm’ in an effort to sound intelligent. Shudder. On another note Street Fighter II Turbo HD is £3.99 on the PSN… that’s assuming you can get through the store without throwing your controller at the screen. Seriously, why is it so slow and laggy?Rangersingh (PSN ID) Next gen premonitionI have just completed Deadly Premonition which I thoroughly enjoyed. It is bloated in parts but a great Twin Peaks style experience. Once you get past the PlayStation 2 graphics and the first few hours it becomes a great storytelling GTA style adventure. This game is way ahead of its time and would love to see it move to next gen with a nip/tick and prettier graphics. I reckon it would be a surprise hit.RumanGC: Were you playing the Director’s Cut, which does have slightly better graphics? Wrong audienceI, like a few others, were slightly disappointed with the latest Nintendo Direct. I hate to be a pessimist, but with no new announcements, they were just preaching to the already converted. Showing clips from Donkey Kong Country: Jungle Freeze and Mario Kart 8 felt like they were just trying to fill up 40 minutes. Also, no release dates for Bayonetta 2 or Super Smash Bros. didn’t help. Oh well, at least all the videos did look good, especially Mario Kart.Dark Anima X (gamertag/PSN ID/NN ID)
